Many of the most beautiful paintings and poems, both in China and Britain, celebrate gardens.
The Chinese and British have both attached especial importance to gardens over the centuries and have developed great skills as designers and horticulturalists.
Over the last 400 years Chinese plants and gardens have had a major influence on British gardens, art and ceramics. This exhibition brings together contemporary artists from China and Europe who are presenting their unique understandings of the ‘garden’ theme.
The curators of the exhibition are Professor Emeritus of King’s College, Cambridge Alan Macfarlane and Zilan Wang, a research associate at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and executive director of the Cambridge Rivers Project (CRP). The exhibition is part of the Xu Zhimo Poetry and Art Festival which was hosted by The Cambridge Rivers Project (University of Cambridge) and King’s College Development Office, and took place at King’s College, Cambridge from 11-17 August. The poetry event welcomed distinguished poets from China and Europe, including Bei Dao, Ouyang Jianghe, Rod Mengham, Ales Steger, Nikola Madzirov, Vahni Capildeo and Elisa Biagini.
